Book Review: Always Anjali
This year I was paired up with Bharat Babies to review Always Anjali written by Sheetal Sheth and illustrated by Jessica Blank for MCBD 2019. If you are not aware of MCBD scroll down to the bottom of the post and you will find all details about the event that celebrates diverse reads for kids.
I admit I fell in love with the blurb of the book. It was a story so familiar. I still do it. I search for my name at times in the mall, on Christmas ornaments and such. My 9-year old does it too. We laugh and share how unique our names are. Author, Sheetal Sheth brings the very familiar situation in the form of a book and we loved it.
Anjali, could have easily been kuttyma. The illustrations are beautiful too. Anjali is vibrant and full of life. Even her anger is so real and you could feel for her. Learning to stand up for yourself, is a hard lesson for any child especially one growing up in a third culture.
How Anjali’s family supports her and helps her find her place in our diverse world is told in easy to read language and supported by great images.
I did have a hard time swallowing the line where the author describes India as a land of magic.
To be different is to be marvelous
Sheetal Sheth in Always Anjali
This book is a great read for kids aged 5-8 and a wonderful diverse read to add on to any library.
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2019 (1/25/19) is in its 6th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom.Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
