Audio Books
and me are no match. Unfortunately 🙁
Remember this post? With all good intentions I set out to try to listen while I drive. My first pick was Taj Mahal [CD sound recording] : passion and genius at the heart of the Moghul Empire / by Diana and Michael Preston . I started off with all good intentions and I was quite sure I would love listening to some history and facts unknown about the Taj Mahal. I could not go past the 2nd minute. How bad is that? The narrator’s voice was not magical or rather listen-worthy. The subject was very sleep inducing. It just did not work. I gave myself a couple of days and tried it again and same results.
I decided to give another book a chance and this time it was Gandhi & Churchill [CD sound recording] : [the epic rivalry that destroyed an empire and forged our age] / by Arthur Herman.. This book started off better. I loved the voices of the introducer and the narrator. I really felt that I could do this book. A couple of minutes into it comes the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. It is tough to hear the plight of people – of how parents watched helpless as their infant died. Heart-wrenching. A book would tone down the effect. Seeing it as a collection of letters would have lessened the pain I felt. I stopped it. I could not listen more. I guess the timing also is not the greatest. With marches for freedom and protests in the news this felt so real like it is happening in front of my eyes. I could not do it. The CDs lay untouched in my car for weeks before I had to return them.
For now I stick to NPR and nursery rhymes.Maybe, audio books and me are not meant to be.
I will try them again in a few months and maybe will have different results.

March 18, 2011 at 6:36 pm@kannamma – I think it is more the time of the day I listen to these – after work commute. Exhausting time of the day and my mind is just not open for more info upload. I need small news segments and not a lengthy description – the reason why I love NPR – tell me some of your favorite podcasts – I want to try them
