Book Review: Are you there God? It’s me Margret
I decided to get back to reading my way through the Time magazine list of top 100 novels and Judy Blume’s name caught my eye. A book by Judy Blume – the young adult author and I was all game. The title of the book also helped me pick it up.
This book was breeze. One of the fastest reads. The book is light and it has you laughing. By no means it is insignificant – it is a book written for me or so it felt.
Margret is a teen with atheist parents. She tries to fit in. She tries to find out her relationship with God and all along she battles the usual teenage woes – boys, bras, and the big one – periods. Marget’s relationship with God is in lot of ways my relationship with God and it is something I want to teach my little girl. God is your friend. He does not have to live in a church or a temple. He helps those who help themselves.
I loved the simplicity of this book and wish I had read it when I was another confused teen with more questions than answers about religion and spirituality and my role. If you have a teen who is going through it – irrespective of what your religious beliefs are this book will help. If you are an adult wanting a quick, humorous read over a weekend pick this up. Laugh with Margret and take her journey.
