Book Review: Nazaqat
When I was first contacted by the author to review the book, I did a quick search to understand what the book was about. The blurb I read had me intrigued. It seemed very real and interesting. I decided it would be something I would enjoy reading.
The book starts in 2030 with business woman Naazani Singh Shekhawat being pursued by media . I was hooked. As I continued reading, the story began to lead down to the past – the early years of Naazani is one of neglect and then she discovers the internet. This was when the alarm bells started ringing in my mind.
I pursued along and read about the transition of Naazani to Nazaqat – a prostitute with the help of an manager Sharat. I liked how Nazaqat’s character has been described here. She was a no-nonsense professional. She did what she wanted and she didn’t bother to explain to others. Why would such a strong woman depend on Sharat to take a stand about prostitution was a eyebrow raiser?
The plot started collapsing around this place. While I do understand what the author was aiming at I just couldn’t get over the confused Naazani/Nazaqat. She was all over the place. Something like “When she was good, she was very good and when she was bad, she was very bad”. I sensed something sinister when the story begun and the book does have some sinister rather interesting bits.
The book could do with some serious editing. Typos are a major eyesore in any book. It threw me off. I would have abandoned the book if not for the story. The other thing the book needed was a different structure. The Bollywood inspired story structure doesn’t translate well in a book in my opinion.
A good read with enormous potential to have been a great read. You can know more about the author here
I received a free copy of the book from the author for review. All opinions are my own
