Bridges along the Singapore River
You know those brochures they put out for tourists at public places? Advertisements – rather slick looking ones colorful and prominently displayed? I am one of those folks who picks them up. All the time – I love to read them. I find it a great source of information. Later they turn into art projects with kuttyma.
One such brochure I picked up at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) was about the bridges and the underpass art along Singapore River. Given my fascination with bridges, history and water in general it was no doubt I decided to explore. The pictures look better when you click on them
Anderson Bridge

Did you know that during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore severed heads of criminals were hung from this bridge as a warning ??
Cavenagh Bridge

The only suspension bridge in Singapore. The initial design was for a drawbridge but due to technical issues it became a fixed bridge
Elgin Bridge

The Elgin Bridge – it was the location of the first bridge across the river. It was a wooden bridge. The current vehicular bridge was built in 1929
Coleman Bridge:
Read Bridge
Ord Bridge

Built in 1886. Around this area the Singapore River is being diverted to make way for the new MRT train station – a huge project
Clemenceau Bridge
Alkaff Bridge
Pulau Saigon Bridge
Robertson Bridge
Jiak Kim Bridge
Kim Seng Bridge
My favorite is the Jiak Kim Bridge. It is a great walk exploring the bridges. I suggest you start at the Raffles MRT early in the morning and walk your way to have brunch at Robertson Quay before wrapping up.
I would do it all over again.
