MCBD 2021: Dende Maro Book Review
I have a soft spot for the Multicultural Children’s Book Day. I have been reviewing as a part of their #ReadYourWorld campaign for years now. I always seem to get back on my blog for MCBD.
This year, I was paired up with Hoopoe Books and received a copy of Dende Maro: The Golden Prince. Thank you Hoopoe Books!
With the daughter having graduated to reading more middle grade and upper middle grade fiction, I miss picture books in my life. Our library hauls are 300-400 page books and I miss the comfort of going back to picture books. I was so happy to read this with my now 11-year old and discuss more about MCBD with her. (She is reviewing her own MCBD book – The Last Cherry Blossom by Kathleen Burkinshaw. Check out her post here).
Dende Maro immediately transported us to Africa (a continent we have not yet visited) The book has wonderfully created collages inspired by ancient rock art and take the reader through a journey of humans to learn and develop arts, science, language and math.
Dende Maro for parent and child to read and discuss. To see the world and its history and marvel at the journey of our ancestors. Highly recommended read for kids aged 6+ .
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021 (1/29/21) is in its 8th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.
Eight years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues. Read about our Mission & History HERE.
