Modern Twists
I make sure kuttyma gets her dose of Indian mythology regularly. Stories I grew up with, stories that talk about Hindu Gods and animals. Beautiful stories that have stood the test of time. Kuttyma is often seen putting her own spin to these stories. I find them cute – well I am the mother whatelse do you expect? I am sure there will be few who will call it blapshemy. I could care less – I just want to document it.
Original story: A crocodile grabs the leg of an elephant drinking water in a pond. The elephant, an ardent devotee of Lord Aadimoolar calls out his name. He comes, kills crocodile, saves elephant and grateful elephant presents a lotus to God.
Kuttyma’s version: We were at the Lantern festival and at the middle of the lake they had a beautiful swan family lantern display. We were seated along the banks of the lake waiting for the fireworks to start when we saw someone use a boat to reach the fireworks platform to get the fireworks ready.
The alligator in the water (she points to a partly submerged stone) goes and catches the swan. The swam screams for help and Aadimuthali (I have been teaching her crocodile = muthali in Tamizh so she linked both) came in a boat, rowed near the swans and saved them. Later he plucked lotus and gave the swan.
Story 2:
She has been super fascinated by Lord Krishna and his naughtiness. She wants to eat butter just like Krishna and never gets bored of stories about Krishna. The eternal favorite is the way Krishna gets his friends to form a human pyramid while his mother is asleep and steals the butter.
Modern day learning: She was playing with her magnetic letters on the fridge while I was cooking.
Her: Look mommy, X,Y,Z are bending and Krishna is climbing and here is the butter “b”.
Honestly I was impressed. I could not believe her creativity and imaginative powers
I later guided her to use “K” for Krishna just like she had used “b” for butter.
