My love affair

The whole world or rather the Indian population around the world is talking about the new Mile Sur Mera Tumhara (If you have not see it, you can see it here) and thrashing it. Quite aptly I would say. But then when have remakes made waves (of the positive kind). Sometimes it makes me feel that we are struck in the past and cannot let it go to welcome the new. But that is not what I wanted to write about.

Like millions of others, I watched the video just to see what the hype was all about and the one thing that stood out was the Sarod. I love deep tones from the Sarod and it is so-soul stirring. I am music-illiterate but some music moves me to tears and holds me captive and Amjad Ali Khan’s Sarod music has done it to me. The first time I heard him play was at my college SPIC MACAY event, 5 years back and that is when the love affair begun.

It is such a magical instrument and falling in love with it is so easy. It is something one does not hear often but you hear it, you are lost – lost in a sea of thoughts and happiness. I am quite surprised how the Sarod’s music can make me think and smile at the same time. After my introduction to the Sarod at college, I did try to find as much as Sarod music as possible and hear but with time they faded out and now thanks to the new video I fall in love all over again.

And 5 years later, I realize love never fades and music is forever. I do not know anything about the raagam or thaalam or what is being played but I just know I love it. I am off populating my play list with Sarod music. Does anyone have suggestions where to look and what to buy?

I leave you with a couple of pics from my SPIC MACAY days.. the Santoor is another of my favorite music instruments…
