P: PT
Physical Training – PT was a weekly affair during school days. I hated it. As a kid, I tried to get away from PT classes by hidden around the corner, under the benches (and I have been caught) and in the toilets. Later, I used to get “special” permission to spend time in the library during PT period. I don’t know why I had this aversion to PT.
I remember my first PT master – Kulandaivel Sir, his stiff moustache and stern looks definitely scared me then (they probably will scare me even now). I remember Ms.Dolly Paul, who was our PT teacher during my middle school years.
Sports Day and its precursor Heats were days I looked forward to. Cheering for the different “houses” – Bosco, Gabriel and Montfort. It was always fun. The huge drums came out and you could hear it reverberating as drill practices and march past runs became routine.
In memory of PT, a haiku
Let us have a ball
Games to play and teams to form
Dirty, bruised, sweaty
White canvas shoes on
Sportsmanship spirit to grow
Smack! The ball soars high
Kick, Dribble, Throw, Hit
Rules to follow and lines to form
Ball so round rolls on
Laughter, fights abound
Oh scorching sun, how merciless
Respite from textbooks
March Pasts, Drills and more
Sports Day fever slowly sets in
Boom! Boom! The drum goes
We cry ourselves hoarse
Cheering athletes, demanding wins
“Pepsis” to suck on
PT to get us fit
To get us out of darkness
Weekly we wait for
Another week of A to Z gone. Come back on Monday for Q: Questions
