Shaws @ Katong: A review
Somewhere along the line I forgot to write about things that worked wonderfully well for us in Singapore. I promise to catch up and do better.
Today I am going to write about the preschool/daycare kuttyma attends
When we moved from the US, I was really worried about finding a good daycare/preschool for my then 2.5 year old. We had a misstep – we ended up in a daycare that we did not like. And we re-started our search and choose Shaws at Boscombe.
Located in Katong, this school has been keeping us very happy the past 6+ months. I loved how I was told upfront that the kids learn the fun way. In an education obsessed Singapore I was relieved to hear that. I have nothing against “Tiger Moms” or schooling but I firmly believe that someday my daughter will also have to run the rat race and I just want her to enjoy childhood as much as possible.
Shaws makes sure my daughter learns in a fun way. They are always exploring or trying something new which is interesting. You can read more about Shaw’s philosophy and curriculum on their website. The little one always has stories to tell. And she cannot stop talking about her teachers and friends. An inspiring teacher is all she needs and I am so glad Shaws provides her that.
I love how they post pictures of their day-to-day happenings on a website. It gives me a peek into her days. It is easy for me to relate to what she did at school and talk about the same things at home. It also helps me keep in touch with school via the internet.
They also have an outdoor playarea which is a rarity in Singapore as I have learned during my trek to various preschools. There is little league activity, water play and more. At home, kuttyma is more of a bookworm than a little activity center. But at school I see a different girl – she loves to jump around and play with her friends.
More than anything else I love how they incorporate my suggestions. As a mother I have my own concerns about her nap time and such. The school has been very patient with me till we figured out what kuttyma actually needed. It was at Shaws that kutttyma went diaper-free and without the support of the teachers I do not think we would have hit the milestone so early on.
They also have Mandarin classes daily. For someone who had no clue about Mandarin before moving to Singapore a year back – kuttyma is quite proficient. She can read a bit, identify colors and follow conversations. And I am in deep trouble as she keeps asking me for clarifications. She has also started teaching me Mandarin (oh fun!)
Shaws has also put my fears to rest – I was so worried about kuttyma picking up Singlish. I have nothing against Singlish but I wanted my daughter to get a good grasp of English before using Singlish in conversations.
Shaws offers full-day (7am-6pm – not many schools offer this option in Singapore) and half-day programs. I am not sure what is the youngest age they accept kids – my daughter started when she was 2.5 years old and is currently in N1. They provide lunches and snacks and also recommend school bus/van service for students. We use the Buzzing Bee Bus Service recommended by the school and have not been disappointed. I would highly recommend Shaws to any parent looking for a preschool/daycare for their little ones.

All opinions and views expressed here are mine. I was not paid or compensated in any way by Shaws. I am just a satisfied parent.
Please do remember what works for me may not be the best fit for you and your child.
