Wine Country, South Australia
Some of the best wines from Australia come from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale regions. Blessed with rolling hills, fertile soil and just the perfect temperature, the region is a pleasure to visit – wine drinker or not.
We spent 2 idyllic days amongst the vines and farms. What gorgeousness! People who dismiss the Wine Country as a grownup thing are totally wrong. The place has tons of kid-friendly activities. The weather wasn’t the best but we made the most of it.
Victor Harbour
We drove from Adelaide to Victor Harbour taking in the sights. The seas, the cliffs, the vineyards and the diary farms. The Clydesdale horse tram was a sure hit with kuttyma. We spent time chasing gulls and marvelling at the powerful waves crashing at the huge granite rocks before visiting the whale centre to understand the history of whaling. A perfect kid-friendly stop.
The area is littered with little towns, friendly locals and awesome local food. Each town offering so much to explore. I could spend a couple of weeks wandering from town to town, basking by the picture-perfect beaches and soaking it all in. Handorf with its German influence (and great German food) was quite famous with the tourists but I think I liked the small town charm of McLaren Vale.
The Breenberg farm had their strawberry patch open and we braved the cold winds to pick fresh, sweet strawberries. Kuttyma is a strawberry lover and this was a perfect place for her to enjoy.
Gummercha
The Big Rocking Horse at Gummercha is another place she fell in love with. Giant rocking horse, a toy shop and animal farm – perfect for little ones. We stopped there to stretch our legs and earn a certificate telling us we conquered the “World’s Biggest Rocking Horse.”
Our evenings were spent watching the sunsets at different beaches. Christie’s Beach with the surfers taking the waves was a great place to take it all in. Port Wilunga was another favourite – the pebbles washed up on the beach were amazing.
Cellar Doors
We did stop by a few cellar doors. Here are some places we visited and highly recommend for a visit with kids.
– Yelland and Papps – With the trampoline, slides and a resident cat, this place was an instant favourite with kuttyma. She had a blast.
– Kelliermeister – I loved the scenic setting of this place. This is Barossa Valley at its best. They have a box of toys for kids to play with and also hand out activity packs for little ones.
– Gemtree – An organic and sustainable winery with alpacas and sheep. They have a nice outdoor play set for little ones to entertain themselves.
We also stopped at the Goodieson Brewery for a while one evening.
