Top Reads of August and September

  1. I Fell in Love with Hope by Lancali
This was such a beautiful and heartbreaking book. It tells the story of 5 teens, each with an illness that causes them to waste away- one with one lung, another with a failing heart, and so on. They all find solace in each other and learn to love through each other. I loved their journey and the prose in this book was also beautiful. It was such an amazing read and I really enjoyed it!
  2. Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
This was such a magical book! Evangeline has always believed in true love and happy endings, but when her true love marries another, she knows something has to change. So she seeks out the Prince of Hearts to make a deal, not realizing that it would change her whole life…This was such an amazing book and I loved the magic and fantasy embedded in it!
  3. Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Daisy Jones has always had a talented voice- naturally talented. But with a less than wholesome background and no one to really support her, she never blossomed out as a singer. However, as The Six, a new band, gain popularity, she’s called to feature on one of their songs which gains massive popularity. This story was told in the format of interviews and was impossible to put down. I really enjoyed it!
  4. The Last Song of Penelope by Claire North
This was such a beautiful book! It told the story of Penelope, queen of Ithaca. Her story is told so clearly, with an emphasis on her and what she’s feeling, which isn’t really shown in the Odyssey. I loved the whole book and it’s theme of power! This was the last book in a trilogy, but even though I hadn’t read the two previous books, I was able to understand it quite well and so, I completely recommend it to you!

Top Books of April and May

Here are my top reads of April and May! April’s books are the first 2 and May’s are the last 3.

  1. The Shadow of Perseus by Claire Heywood
This was a great book about one of the “heroes” from Greek mythology! Perseus is commonly known as the only hero with a happy ending, but this fails to consider the women in his life. I loved the way the story flowed and its plot! I also enjoyed how we got 3 POVs from the most important women in his life- Danaë, his mother, Medusa, the woman he killed, and Andromeda, his wife. It was such a great book and I really enjoyed it!
  2. The Cobra’s Song by Supriya Kelkar
I loved this book! When Geetanjali gets stage fright for the first time in her life, she’s sure it’s over. She can’t stand up for her friends and now, she might be at risk of losing her best friend. Not only that, her usually kind and caring neighbor is now cold and distant-possible possessed by the snake gem. I really enjoyed the story and the way that the book’s characters were developed! I totally recommend it to you!
  3. Wretched Waterpark by Kiersten White
I really enjoyed this book! When Theo, Alexander, and Wil are suddenly told to go spend the summer with their mysterious Aunt Saffronia, they aren’t sure how to react, especially when their aunt decides to deposit them at the Fathoms of Fun waterpark, a waterpark that looks more like a nightmare zone. Then comes the problem of all the staff suddenly changing their personalities…This was such a great read and I totally recommend it to you! I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series!
  4. Family of Liars by Emily Lockhart
This was the prequel to We Were Liars! In this book, Caroline’s own story comes to life during the summer that the boys arrived. The island is their own safe haven and soon, the boys both help build that up and break that down. Carrie falls for Pfeff, though he doesn’t seem to reciprocate the same feelings. As Pfeff shows just how much he doesn’t care for Carrie, their relationship splinters, to the point where she hates him. I really enjoyed this book and the way it defines the book after it! I totally recommend it to you!
  5. The Ojja Wojja by Magdalene Visaggio
This was a graphic novel about two misfits in a “perfect” town. They’re terrorized by a bully, but find solace in each other and their small projects. Until one of those projects accidentally awakens a demon who takes over their town and makes their bully the center of it all. Only the two and their friends are spared. But the ritual to recapture the demon is tricky and they have to learn that sometimes, violence isn’t always the answer!

My Top Books of March ’23

  1. Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati
This was such an amazing book! I’d heard about it for a really long time and so when I was able to get it, I was really excited! This book is about Queen Clytemnestra, one of the most infamous characters in Greek mythology, as she murdered her own husband after watching him kill their daughter as a sacrifice. I loved the way Clytemnestra was portrayed in the book, especially as we got to see her early years and how that led up to who she is. It’s a great story!
  2. Threads that Bind by Kika Hatzopoulou
I really enjoyed this book! It creates an intriguing world where the gods have died and humans and otherborns alike are left to fend for themselves. The otherborns are descendants of magical creatures, like the Fates, the Furies, the Graces and many others. Each otherborn has a special ability that they can use to change the world around them. I loved the worldbuilding that happened in this book and the way that they story evolved. This is a great read!
  3. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
This was such a good book! Starr knows grief. She’s witnessed it with Natasha, and now, she witnesses it with Khalil. Now, she’s the only one left out of their friend group. Starr has to figure out where her loyalties lie as she struggles through family and school life. I really enjoyed this book and the way that the story was created. It was powerful and held strength in each sentence. I totally recommend it to you!
  4. Brighter Than the Moon by David Valdes
Jonas and Shani met online. Ash and Shani are childhood friends. When Shani suspects something isn’t right, she asks Ash to investigate. But soon, they all find themselves stressed out and dealing with all their problems. Not to mention, that their feelings are confused and they don’t know what to do with their lives. I really enjoyed this book! I loved the characters and the different perspectives, so you could see how each character reacts to what. It’s such an amazing book and I love how it ends!

My Favorite Greek Mythology Books

Here are some of my favorite books that are based on Greek mythology!

  1. Circe by Madeline Miller
This is probably one of my favorite books, both Greek mythology based and in general! The first glimpse I got of Circe was from the 2nd Percy Jackson book, where she is written as a minor antagonistic character. This was backed up by other Greek mythology books, but this book put it in a totally new perspective.
Circe has never been pretty or melodious, like her siblings, but when she meets a fisherman and falls in love, then everything else falls away. She realizes he doesn’t reciprocate those feelings, instead loving Scylla. Seized by jealousy, she uses her knowledge of the plants that grow by her home to transform her, then steals away to live her own life. I loved this book and how it was beautifully written. I totally recommend this book to you!
  2. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
This was another great novel written by Madeline Miller! Patroclus’ name means “glory of the father” which is ironic, since he’s anything but. When he accidentally kills a child of noble birth, his father exiles him to Phthia, where he meets Peleus and his son, Achilles. Achilles and Patroclus instantly form a bond when they’re kids, and become lovers when they’re older. Achilles, one day, receives a prophecy that he will kill Hector, but then die himself. Achilles doesn’t believe this, but prophecies always come true… This was such a great book and I totally recommend it to you!
  3. Ariadne by Jennifer Saint
This was such an interesting book! Unlike the 2 previous books, this one is less of a retelling and more of what was actually done, but this time, through Ariadne’s perspective. Ariadne’s life has been stifling, to say the least. So when a handsome man shows up and promises to take her away, she believes him and helps him do whatever it takes. But when he abandons her, she has to learn how to live by herself and create her own life. I really enjoyed this book and how, even though it stuck more to the original myth, it was just as enthralling! I totally recommend it to you!
  4. The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood
This was such an interesting take on The Odyssey. In this retelling though, we get Penelope’s perspective, using choruses from the maids and a unique form of storytelling. In The Odyssey, there’s always been one unanswered question- What led to the hanging of the maids? This book answers that question in such a refreshing way and I loved how the book continued to flow. This is such a great book and I totally recommend it to you!
  5. Lore by Alexandra Bracken
This was a Hunger Games- like story, with Greek Mythology based characters. Every year, 9 of the Greek Gods are forced to wander the Earth, danger at every step, since they could easily be killed and their immortality taken by the killer. Lore left that life many years ago when her family was killed. But when a childhood friend and Athena, the goddess of wisdom, come to her, looking for help, she decides to get revenge. I really enjoyed this book and the way that the story was written. I totally recommend this book to you!

Fictional Characters I Admire: Annabeth Chase

I’m starting a new series- Fictional Character I Admire. In each post, I’ll be telling you about one of the fictional characters who I love reading about. Today, I’ll be telling you about Annabeth Chase.

I pick up Percy Jackson and the Olympians and get lost in the fantasy world of Rick Riordan, especially the tales of Annabeth Chase. Annabeth is a demigod (half god, half human). Her mother is Athena, the goddess of wisdom and she always plays a crucial part in all of the quests she goes on. I love her story and here’s some reasons why.

Annabeth is such a strong female character. She’s great at fighting and can take down many Greek monsters with her dagger. Her life as a demigod is hard, but she perseveres through it. Annabeth has faced many monsters throughout her life as a demigod. Despite the type of problem, she easily comes up with a logical plan and deals with the toughest of them. Annabeth has been through Tartarus, the Greek version of hell. Even when she was trapped down there with her boyfriend, Percy, she was able to think logically and helped them get out as quick as possible.

Annabeth faces so many real problems throughout all the books. While she battles fantasy monsters, she also faces real ones with her emotions. I love seeing her weaknesses, just because it makes her more human. During the first series, she faced intense jealousy towards a later friend of hers, Rachel. It was interesting to see another, more real, side of my favorite character. During the second series, she has extreme self-doubt about her abilities. While all of her friends have powers, she has none, leading herself to doubt what she is capable of.

Annabeth Chase will always be one of my favorite characters, because not only is she strong, she has weaknesses that make her more like an actual person. She’s such a great character and I love reading about her and who she is.

4 Reasons Why You Should Read Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a great series by Rick Riordan. There are ups and down, laughter and tears. It’s full of mythology, but also has an added touch which you’ll discover if you read the books. Each book leads into the next, and I can guarantee you won’t be able to put it down.

1. The Characters

I love learning about the characters ups and downs and how they have progressed through the story. It’s so fun to see how much they’ve matured and changed throughout the course of 5 books. (In which the main characters age from 12-16). I especially love the realism and how the characters seem to come to life in my head. It’s a crazy ride, starting from barely knowing someone to crying when they die.

2. The Plot

What would a good book be without a good plot? This series has funny moments and tearful moments, moments of extreme joy, and times where you hope for the best. With unexpected twists at every page, what you expect is never what’s going to happen. The plot always makes me want to go back and dive deep into the book. Rick Riordan writes in so much detail that it’s always a great read.

3. The Mythology

Rick Riordan takes Greek mythology, then twists it to come up with the most marvelous things. These books include heroes like the Greek gods and goddesses and monsters like the minotaurs or empousas. I’ve definitely learned a lot from this series. While it might not be totally accurate, I definitely know a lot more than I did 2 years ago.

4. The Other Series

There are so many other series born out of this one. Currently, the Percy Jackson universe has come to a close, with 5 series, but you never know. Maybe we’ll get another one. Everything starts falling into place as you read the other series, especially the Heroes of Olympus. It’s so amazing to keep seeing these characters growing and changing in front of my eyes, through, and I am really excited to read the other series.

I’ve had so much fun while reading this series. I really enjoy these books and I totally encourage you to check out all of them!
