- The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo
This is a collection of works set in the Grishaverse with different folktales from Kerch, Ravka, Zemeni, and Fjerda. I loved all of the stories and the way that they tied into the actual books themselves. The stories were unique and fun and so were the different characters that we got to experience. Some of my favorite stories were Ayama and the Thorn Wood, The Too-Clever Fox, and The Soldier Prince. Each story was beautifully written and I loved the illustrations too. - The Troubled Girls of Dragomir Academy by Anne Ursu
This book was so lively and entertaining. Marya is a young girl who doesn’t feel loved by her parents. Her brother, Luka, gets all the attention because he’s a sorcerer. Or at least, everyone thinks he is. But when Marya ruins her brother’s sorcery test, she’s sent to the Dragomir Academy for Troubled Girls where she finds many secrets and friends. I loved the plot and the way that the story flowed. I really enjoyed the characters and the way that the book progressed. - Ellen Outside the Lines by A.J. Sass
I loved this book so, so much. Ellen and her best friend Laurel are going to Barcelona for a school field trip. Ellen has a full plan of what to do, but that all dies out when her teacher announces a scavenger hunt. Laurel’s been put on a team with all her friends, except for Ellen. And Ellen is all alone with new teammates. I really enjoyed the way this story evolved and grew. I also really loved the diversity, with nonbinary, gay, and lesbian characters. I love this book so much! - And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
I really loved this murder mystery! Indian Island is the most fashionable place and all that anyone’s talking about. So when 8 people get an invitation to go, they jump at the chance. When they get there though, the owner is missing and then, suddenly their secrets are exposed and they start dropping off, one by one. The story is told well and I definitely got fooled more than once. I really enjoyed the plot and the characters a lot. It was a great read! - Lily and Dunkin by Donna Gephart
This was a really sweet book about a bipolar boy and a transgender girl. Lily knows that she’s a girl. But that’s hard when you were born a boy. Her mom and sister understand, but it doesn’t seem like her dad gets how she feels. Dunkin has just moved with his mom and he’s torn between Lily or the basketball guys. I really enjoyed this book and all the diversity it had. This is such a great read!

My Top Books of January
My first top book post of 2022! Here are my top books of January.
- Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo
This was such a great book! It ended the Grishaverse series and was part of the King of Scars duology. This book told the story of Nikolai, Zoya, and Nina. Nikolai, the king of Ravka, has to figure out how to defeat the Fjerdans with little to no weapons or money. He also has to figure out his feelings for Zoya when he should be marrying a princess. Zoya, Nikolai’s general, is trying to adjust to her new life with a dragon inside of her. She keeps forcing herself to forget her feelings for Nikolai, even when he admits he reciprocates them. Nina, Nikolai’s spy, realizes that the best thing for Hanne is to win a man but she won’t accept it. I love their journey and the twists and turns that you’ll never forget. I totally recommend this series to you. - The School for Whatnots by Margaret Peterson Haddix
This book was so interesting! I loved the characters and the plot. Max’s life changed when his best friend, Josie, leaves him a note, telling him that “No matter what anyone says, I’m real,” Soon after, Max learns what whatnots are. They’re robots, built to look and act like humans to surround the rich kids and make them feel protected. Max refuses to believe this and starts searching for Josie. There are so many twists which I never saw coming and I loved the narration style. This is such a great book! - Premeditated Myrtle by Elizabeth C. Bunce
I really enjoyed this book and the mysteriousness of it all. Myrtle is such a lively character and I enjoyed the way she went about solving the murder. It was written in such a way that you could figure out the mystery with Myrtle and it all made sense in the end. This is such a great book and I loved it a lot. I totally recommend it to you. - Operation Do-Over by Gordon Korman
This book was so good! I loved Mason and the way we got to see his character in two different times. Mason and Tyrus were the best of friends until Ava. Now, they never talk. One day, Mason wakes up as his old self and he knows it’s a chance to have a do-over. I loved this book and the plot. The ups and downs were perfect and the whole thing was spectacular. This is such a great book! - When Did You See Her Last? by Lemony Snicket
This is part of the All the Wrong Questions series. I really liked the book and the mysteries that came along with it. Lemony Snicket is an apprentice to S. Theodora Markson. They’re investigating the disappearance of Cleo Knight, though all the adults seem to give up too early, not seeing the missing pieces. Lemony and his friends, Ellington and Moxie, try to solve the mystery. I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
I hope you enjoyed my top reads!
December’s Top Reads

I love this series so much. Clary Fray is a tennager when she realizes that she sees things that others don’t. She meets Jace, Isabelle, and Alec, the other Shadowhunters. I loved their adventures and there were so many lot twists that shocked me. This is such a great book and I loved reading it so much. I totally recommend it to you! - The Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch
I read the second and third books in this series (If You’re Reading this, it’s Too Late and This Book is Not Good for You). Cassandra and Max-Ernest are such great characters and I enjoyed the involment of a new character, Yo-Yoji. this stories are great and I loved the storytelling style. I love this series! - The Hawthorne Legacy by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
I am in love with this series. In this book, Avery continues her adventures with the Hawthorne Brothers. There are so many secrets revealed and a whole new land is discovered. I really, really enjoyed the plot and the characters. I totally recommend this book to you! - Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim
I really enjoyed this book! In this book, Shiori, the only one with magical powers in her kingdom, gets cursed by her stepmother, Raikama. Her brothers turn into cranes and Shiori, without a voice, sets out to save them. I loved the story and the plot! This is the first part of a duology based on the fairytale, “The Wild Swans,”. - The Verdigris Pawn by Alysa Wishingrad
I loved this book and the way it invented a game that worked so well with the book. When Beau meets Cressi, he finally sees the true ways of his father and the ones before him. He realizes that he has to take control of the king, but before he can do that, he needs his ace and his pawn. I loved this story so much!

November’s Top Books
Here are my top books for November!
- The House on Hoarder Hill by Kelly Ngai and Mikki Lish
This is a great story about 2 kids who are determined to find out the mystery behind the disappearance of their grandma, Rose. Hedy and Spencer are at their grandpa’s house while their parents are on vacation. They get a mysterious message (Find Me) setting them off on their crazy adventure with piano-playing ghosts, mischievous paintings, and a very friendly bear rug and a glorious deer head. I loved the story and the way it progressed. This is such a great book! - Much Ado About Baseball by Rajani LaRocca
This book is about friendship, but it has so many other great themes coursing through it. Trish has just moved to a new town and is finding it hard to make new friends and fit in. So she joins the baseball team, hoping to meet someone new. There, she sees Ben, who she met and beat at the Math Puzzler Championships last year. Ben doesn’t want to be on the team, but when he sees Trish, he knows that he can’t quit and be embarrassed by her again. I love what happens next and the way that Shakespeare’s works are tied in. This is a great book! - Amber and Clay by Laura Amy Schlitz
This is definitely one of my favorite books this month. It tells the story of Melisto and Rhakos, two very different children, yet very similar. The story is told in many different points of view, with different types of storytelling for each. There are also “exhibits” which show items from a long time ago. I loved how the author incorporated these items into the story. This story flows so well and I loved watching the plot move along. I definitely recommend it to you! - The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
This is the prequel to the Hunger Games. It follows Coriolanus Snow, the antagonist in the original series, when he is young, 18 years old. He has been assigned to mentor a tribute for this year’s Hunger Games, a tribute from District 12, the worst district. He meets Lucy Gray this way and is enthralled by her, especially her voice. I loved following the events of the story and the way the plot continued. The characters are written very well and it was great to see how the characters grew into who they are in the actual books. I love this book! - The Name of This Book is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch
This book’s storytelling style is unique, with the author keeping many things closely guarded. The two main characters, Cass and Max-Ernest go on a quest to rescue their friend when he is kidnapped by Ms. Mauvis and Dr. L. They go to the Midnight Sun, where strange things are happening. I loved their adventure and the way the story was told. It was very unique and I enjoyed it a lot. I totally recommend this book to you!

Top Reads of October
Here are my top books for October!
- The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
This is such a great book. The Iliad/The Trojan War is my weakest subject in Greek Mythology and I’ve always wanted to learn about it. I found this book so sweet and perfect in the way that it doesn’t focus too much on the war, instead focusing on the love between Patroclus and Achilles. I love the way this book (and Patroclus and Achilles’ friendship) developed and I found the plot perfect. The ending was one of the saddest things I’ve ever read. I love this book so much! - Hazel Bly and the Deep Blue Sea by Ashley Herring Blake
Hazel is a young girl who has just moved to Rose Harbor in Maine. When her mom (known as Mama) runs into an old friend, Claire, past feelings emerge again. She meets Claire’s daughter who’s obsessed with the legend of the Rose Maid, a 150 year old mermaid. Hazel finds herself getting swept up in the story and starts to open her heart to the magic in life. This is such a great book. I loved the way it talked about trauma and LGBT+ perspectives. None of it felt forced and all of it just molded into one story. - Da Vinci’s Cat by Catherine Gilbert Murdock
This is a beautiful book about time travel and friendships. Federico is a hostage to the Pope living in the 1500s and Bee is a young girl who has just moved to a new house. The book starts off with Federico following a kitten who leads him to a closet. The kitten goes inside, then emerges as a full grown cat with someone named Herbert Bother. The two become close friends and rely on each other, until Herbert doesn’t come back. Then, a girl named Bee steps out of the closet. She has her own motives and secrets and is trying to understand what to do to get on with her life. This book is such a great read and I love it so much! - King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo
This is the first book in the duology that focuses on Nikolai, a side character in both Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows. I love this book and the perspectives it is told from. Zoya is a Grisha (someone who can do magic). She’s been working with the king to help him battle his mysterious new ailment and the way it’s been affecting him while grappling with her own past. Nikolai is doing his best as a young king, trying to keep down the beast inside of him and be a good leader. When a cult for the Darkling rises, all of this gets challenged. Nina is trying her best after Matthias’ death. She is on a quest with two other Grisha. As she meets a new friend, she understands how to embrace her new power and how to work smart. I totally recommend this series to you! - Tristan Strong Destroys the World by Kwame Mbalia
This is the second book in the Tristan Strong series. Tristan is back at his grandparents’ farm, but he’s been hearing whispers asking him to save the speaker. No one else seems to hear them, so he dismisses them until his Nana is kidnapped and the main man behind it, The Shackle Man, comes to the farm. He finds a way back to Alke, the mystical and magical world where African myths are real. He gets the help of his old friends Ayanna and Gum Baby and makes a new ally, Junior. This is such a great book and I can’t wait to read the last book in the trilogy!

Top Reads of September
Here are my top reads of September.
- The Force of Fire by Sayantani DasGupta
The Force of Fire is a great book about Pinki, the rakkhoshi previously mentioned in the Kingdom Beyond series. We got the see the adventures of Pinki when she was growing up. I loved the different elements and all of the references to the original series. - Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia
This was part of the Rick Riordan Imprints series. Tristan has recently been sent to his grandparents’ farm after losing his closest friend, Eddie. At the farm, he discovers a strange tree which takes him to Alke, a place where fantasy characters are real! I loved learning about South African mythology in this amazing book. - Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
This was the second part of the Giver quartet. This book focused on Kira, who’s mother has recently died. She’s an orphan, unsure of her way in this world, until the government takes her in, asking her to sew for them. I loved this book and the way that all of the details worked together. It was such a great read! - A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz
This is the first book in the Grimm series. Hansel and Gretel and two siblings, lost and confused in the world. Their parents showed no love to them, so they ran away, experiencing many awful and great things. I loved the way that so many story tales were put in this book and the way that they were all twisted. - Breathing Underwater by Sarah Allen
This book is about Olivia, who’s sister, Ruth, has been diagnosed with depression. Olivia has a plan to help Ruth, while she struggles with her own feelings. I loved the way that this book flowed and the seriousness of it. It’s such a great read!

- The Best Worst Summer by Elizabeth Eulberg
This is a story about Peyton, who has recently moved. In her backyard, she finds a time capsule from 1989. There seems to be a mystery behind the contents of the box and Peyton decides to find out what it is with the help of her new friend Lucas. The story alternates between modern day (with Peyton and Lucas) and 1989 (with Melissa and Jessica). I really enjoyed this story and all of the little clues along the way. - The Adventure is Now by Jess Redman
This book tells the story of Milton, a socially awkward boy, with not many friends. The only time when he feels free is when he plays Isle of Wild. That summer, his parents send him to Lone Island to live with his Uncle Evan. At first Milton isn’t happy to be there, but then he discovers the secrets of the island. I loved this book and the themes behind it. All the characters were written really well and I enjoyed every part of the book. - Flight of the Puffin by Ann Braden
This is a story told by 4 narrators- Libby, Jack, Vincent, and T. It starts with Libby drawing inspiring messages on postcards. These postcards begin to travel, helping the other kids through their hard times. I loved the way that all the kids were linked up and the way that the story flowed. This is such a sweet book. - A Thousand Beginnings and Endings by Ellen Oh and Elsie Chapman
This was an anthology with a lot of authors that I enjoyed. The stories were retellings of Asian myths and legends. I have always loved retellings and I really enjoyed these stories. They were all so imaginative and I loved them all. Some of my favorites were Still Star-Crossed, Daughter of the Sun, and Girls who Twirl and Other Dangers. - Time Traveling with a Hamster by Ross Welford
This book is about Al, who gets a mysterious letter from his (dead) dad on his 12th birthday. The letter tells him to travel back in time to save his dad and change the future. I loved the way that the book was written and i think it handled the concepts of alternate universes really well. Al is such a great character and I also enjoyed the way that the other characters were fleshed out as well. This is such a great book! - The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
This is a dystopian trilogy, set in a world where every year, a boy and a girl are chosen from each district to fight in the Hunger Games. It’s a fight to the death and there’s only one victor until the 74th Hunger Games, where Katniss and Peeta (the two main characters) both win. I loved the characters and the plot. I found the theme very interesting and loved the type of dystopia!

July’s Top Books
Here are my top books for July!
- The Tower of Nero by Rick Riordan
This is the last book in the Riordanverse (others have been hinted at, but there is no proof for them yet). I loved the classic Rick Riordan style and the way how our main character, Apollo/Lester has changed over his time as a mortal (normal human). This book is so great and the different aspects, like Piper’s identity and Meg’s love for unicorns, were amazing. Overall, this was a really great book. - Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
This is SUCH a great duology. I loved getting the different viewpoints and the humor was perfect. You can definitely see the development in the characters and the plot was great. I loved all of the characters, especially Inej and Jesper. This book is filled with danger, love, sadness, and more. I loved every page and think that it was such a great book! - Carry Me Home by Janet Fox
This is such an amazing book. I love the characteristics of all the characters and the how the plot developed. This book brings together sadness, hope, and joy together in the best way possible. It’s an emotional read and I loved the way that the author wrote the emotions. I love this book so, so much and I totally recommend it to you! - The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen
This is a great graphic novel about a young boy struggling to come out to his mother. I love the illustrations and how fairy tales played a big part in the story. It was a really sweet book and I loved the plot and how everything fit together. The fairy tales were beautiful and I loved how the book ended. This is such a great book! - The Pronoun Book by Cassandra Jules Corrigan
This book is a great guide to pronouns for people of all ages! It talks about the main pronouns (she/her, he/him, they/them), but also others (ze/zir, xe/xem, fae/faer). It’s an amazing book with fun pictures. There are also examples of how to use pronouns. It also touches on different parts of LGBT+ like trans, intersex, genderfluid, etc. This is a really great book and it’s really helpful!

June’s Top Books
Here are my top books for June!
June’s Best Books:
- Ariadne by Jennifer Saint
This is a book about Ariadne, a figure in Greek mythology. This tells her story, from a young girl to an older mother. I loved reading about her feelings and the way that she grew, both in personality and in her knowledge. She’s such a true character and I love the way that we also get Phaedra’s (Ariadne’s sister) view as well. - The Cursed Carnival and other Calamities by Rick Riordan
This is a series of short stories from the Rick Riordan Presents authors as well as Rick Riordan. Each character faces a problem and they work together to solve them. There are also little mentions of other stories in some of them and that just makes it so much more fun. I also really love the diversity in the books. - Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
This is the first book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy, the first series in the Grishaverse. Alina is such a brave character and I love the way she faces her problems. The fantasy element is perfect and I really like the way everything plays together. All the characters are well shaped and I can’t wait to read more about all of them in the next two books. - Drum Roll, Please by Lisa Jenn Bigelow
This is a book about family and finding your voice. I love how Melly navigates throughout the confusions of her life and the ways she overcomes her challenges. I also love the LGBT+ content and how it adds to the story. This is such a great book! - The Stolen Prince of Cloudburst by Jaclyn Moriarty
This is part of a series, but you can read each book like standalones. This book is about Esther, an often-forgotten middle child. I love the way the story is conveyed and how we get a great sense of who Esther is. I also really like the connections to the other previous stories. This book is so fun and I really enjoyed the humor and liveliness of the book.

May’s Top Books
- The Last Fallen Star by Graci Kim
This is the newest book is the Rick Riordan Presents series. It focuses on Korean mythology and a girl’s profound love for her adopted sister. I love Riley and her hilarious antics, but also how caring and kind she is. Her imaginative way of solving problems is so creative and I love how she is ready to do anything it takes to get Hattie (her sister) back. The plot twists are also super cool and I can’t wait to read the next book. - The Ivory Key by Akshaya Raman
This was definitely one of my favorite books of this year. It is a fictional novel set in India, told in the point of views of 4 siblings, all very different. Vira is the maharani trying to live up to her mother, Riya is a Raven, going against her own sister, Ronak makes a deal to get him out of the nation, and Kaleb is in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. I love the way that these 4 stories merge together and form one. They are all such brave characters who carry big burdens. The plot twists are also great, and I can’t wait for the next book. - Princess in Practice by Connie Glynn
I loved the second book in the series. Ellie, Lottie, and Jamie are back to stop another plan by the Leviathan. This time, new friends are introduced an old friends are back at it again. More people come to know of the scheme and they gain many close allies. I really enjoyed this book and how everyone interacted (especially Lottie and Ellie). It’s such a fun book and I t0tally recommend this series to you! - A Whole New World by Liz Braswell
This is one of the books in the “Twisted Tales” series. This book is a spin on Aladdin, asking this question. What if Aladdin had never found the lamp? I loved the way Aladdin and Jasmine were developed and how we got to see more of the story from this point of view. They are both so caring and kind, which we can see when they interact with others. I enjoyed this book so much and I can’t wait to read the next ones! - The Unmapped Sea and The Long-Lost Home by Maryrose Wood
These were the last two books in this 6 book long series. Penelope and her pupils are so bright and kind. The story is so beautiful and I love the way that Penelope takes care of them. Both books are so adventurous and the way that Penelope has fun with the Incorrigibles is heartwarming. I especially loved the last book for all the secrets that are revealed and how everything starts to fit into place.
