Why Crafting is Important

Recently, while I’ve been staying in India, I’ve been doing a lot of crafting. From crafting kits to crafts made from old pieces of paper I’ve found, crafting has been something I’ve done every day. It’s been a perfect way to show my creativity and a great way to relax. Arts and Crafts are often regarded as unimportant, but this is a view I believe should change.

Students who study art are 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. They are also 3 times more likely to be awarded for school attendance. I think crafting (and arts in general) is an important part of both school and our daily lives and should be implemented more because of the way it benefits school lives and mental health.

Many people don’t realize how studying art or at least taking part in it is extremely beneficial to the studious part of their lives. In countries that mandate the arts, like Japan, Hungary, and the Netherland, schools are often regarded as some of the best in the topics of math and science. In The No Child Left Behind Act clearly mandates the arts (for example music, languages, and art) as core academic subjects. Multiple studies have also shown that extracurricular art activities/studies help keep students in school longer. Brain research also shows that crafts improve skills in math and reading, as well as promoting creativity, social development, and self-worth.

Crafting is a simple, yet effective way to improve mental health. As stated in the last paragraph, crafts promote creativity, social development, and self-worth, 3 major influencers in mental health. Art (or crafting in general) is proven to help you recognize feelings lurking under the surface, greatly boost your self esteem, and relieving your stress. Furthermore, creating things gives you a healthy coping mechanism/outlet which isn’t destructive and allows you to create something you can call your own. Creating art also takes your mind off of your everyday life and therefore provides a distraction from things that could be worrying.

As you can see, crafting is a useful and simple way to both elevate core skills and improve your mental health. Because of these reasons, I believe crafting should be implemented more and become a daily part of people’s everyday lives.

Online School

Recently, in my English class, we had to write a selection of essays about a given topic. I decided to share with you my expository essay on the topic of Has online school affected students negatively or positively?

I tap at my keyboard frantically, hoping for at least a flicker of life. When none comes, I groan and reach for the charging cables, hoping that I won’t miss too much. I believe online school has negatively affected students by making them lazy, reliant on slideshows, and inactive classroom members.

“Please turn your cameras on, please!” begs my dance teacher as the warm-up sequence begins. Online school has made students lazy, especially in their gym classes. The teacher can’t tell what is happening unless the students put their cameras on, which most of the time, they don’t. It’s hard for the teachers and isn’t a good habit to develop in students.

I sort through the slides, realizing that I would have memorized them better if I had written them down. Online school has made students reliant on slideshows. When students have all of their information on Google Slides or Peardeck, they see no reason to take notes. Taking notes helps many people memorize information and without those notes, getting good grades is harder.

I frown as I’m the only one raising my hand for the third time in a row. Online school has made students inactive in their classes. Many times, there are only 2-3 people who participate, while in in-person school, everyone gets a chance to share their opinions. Students who don’t participate much in online school also probably don’t participate in in-person school either, so this has affected teachers.

I groan as I realize how much I’ve missed in the few moments my computer was dead, then belatedly realize I was unmuted. I believe online school has negatively affected students by making them lazy, reliant on slideshows, and inactive students.

World Peace Essay

In my MUN class, we had to write an essay on ideas that’ll help achieve world peace. Here’s what I wrote. I hope you enjoy!

World Peace. It’s something that’s not in reach considering the world we live in today. But world peace is something we always aim forward to, something we strive for, no matter what. Even though the fight seems hard, world peace is something that we have to hope to achieve someday. Some ways to spark a world with peace include placing better people in power, empowering the younger generation, and sharing power with smaller countries. If we go about these ideas with an open mind and work together while doing them, then world peace isn’t such a far away concept.

I think everyone can agree that not all countries have the right people in power. Some countries have corrupt rulers and others have leaders who won’t do anything. Obviously, not everyone will agree on who the right leader is, but having someone who will benefit the country is an important step that can lead to world peace. The young generation is a proud and strong one and they will stand up for what’s right. People like Malala or Greta Thunberg have been standing up for what they think is right and inspiring people all over the world. If we empower the young generation and provide them with the supplies and help they need to keep standing for what they think is right, people everywhere will be inspired and empowered. Lastly, we need to share power with smaller or younger countries. These countries, being “unimportant” are often pushed aside and there aren’t many ways that they contribute to the bigger countries’ ideas, other than the UN. These countries could have ideas that could change our world, but we don’t listen to them because they’re smaller. If we listen to these countries more or share some of the bigger countries’ power with them, we could grow new ideas with the help of other strong minds.

Obviously, world peace isn’t something that we will be able to achieve tomorrow, with the Russia and Ukraine situation. But if we all work together across the globe, world peace doesn’t look so far away. It’s not something that will happen quickly, but if we are able to achieve it, it’ll be one of the most memorable achievements and one that’ll go down in history. World peace is a far away concept at this moment, but if we replace the corrupt leaders, empower the younger generation, and share power with the smaller countries, it won’t be as hard. Right now, it’s far away, but that doesn’t mean it always has to be.

A Killing in the Park

Last week, there was blood in the fountain of the park. There was a switchblade lying next to the body, blood coating its handle. Dried blood pooled on the pavement, leading to a dead body. This body was of Robert Sheldon, a 17 year old Soc. A Soc in a Greaser park is highly unusual as most of the time each group follows their own boundaries. But it isn’t strange that a Soc would be the first one to break the treaty.

Today, Johnny Cade, a 16-year old Greaser, has confessed to killing Robert. As of this time, he is in the hospital and we were not able to get a statement from him. Johnny is a part of Dallas Winston’s gang, though we were unable to get a statement from him either. We did learn that 14-year old Ponyboy Curtis assisted in the crime and he was open to giving a statement for us.
“It was late and Johnny and I were just hanging at the park. Suddenly this car pulls up and out comes 5 of the Socs for just the two of us. One of them was drowning me and I was almost dead when Johnny, well Johnny saved my life. He just pulled out his switchblade and killed their leader. They all ran off after that,”

Self-defense was all it was. When someone you know is getting drowned, what else would you do? Our next story is…

Platinum- A Soc’s Newspaper

Robert Sheldon, Dead

Most of the Socs were worried when they didn’t see Robert Sheldon on Sunday last week. Then on Monday, when he didn’t come to school, they knew something was wrong. Most of them wondered what could have happened to Bob, a steadfast Soc. Well, wonder no further.

Robert Sheldon, a 17 year old Soc, was killed on Saturday by Johnny Cade, a 16 year old Greaser. Yesterday, Johnny admitted to killing Robert. He is in the hospital now and we were unable to speak to him. We did get a statement from David, a Soc who was there at the time.
“So Randy and Bob came up to me and 2 others. They were drunk and angry and wanted revenge on these Greasers for picking up their girls and I said yes. I was just frightening the other one a bit, nothing much, when the one you called Johnny stabbed Bob. We all ran off after that, because everyone knows never to fight a crazy Greaser,”

So there it is. Johnny Cade killed a Soc with absolutely no reason other than a bit of frightening. On the next story…

Test Day- a Short Story

In English class, we had to write a short story with the prompt I was digging through all the junk in the attic when I found a button that…. I hope you like my story!

On October 8th, the day of my biggest test, I was trying not to panic. I was frantically digging through all the junk in the attic, searching for a button, occasionally pushing my tangled brown hair out of my face, my emerald eyes scanning the old, worn-down boxes relentlessly. An orange, pulsing glow filled the attic as I staggered backwards, throwing my tanned hands up over my eyes. As soon as the glow had faded, I wandered over to where it had come from, my curiosity getting the better of me.

Inside an old and faded purple silk bag was a bright orange button that whirred when I touched it.
“Yes! A button, at last!” I ran my blistered fingers over the plastic surface, deeming it perfect. I ran downstairs, slipping the button into my messenger bag as I did so.
“Late again, Ari?” Mom’s voice was sharp and disapproving. I almost showed her the button, but what was the point? She wouldn’t understand, she never did.
“Sorry Mom,” I looked down at the floor, hoping she wouldn’t drag it out.
“Let’s go,” her tone was brisk and unforgiving, her high heels clicking acroos the floor to the car.

She didn’t speak to me as we drove to school, letting me out of the car quickly. No one greeted me when I walked in, their eyes glued to the front of the classroom in anticipation. I took a deep breath, laying the button on my desk as I found myself adopting the same posture as my classmates.

Today was Test Day, the day that would determine your success or failure in the world. Out teacher, Ms. Zarrah, would call us up to perform out craft, granting us with either a pass or a fail. I worked with buttons, magicking them to my will. Glancing at everyone’s desks, I saw an array of objects, none of them as interesting as mine.

Suddenly, the small, nervous side chatter that had been collecting came to a halt as someone entered the room.
“Greetings, students,” Ms. Zarrah’s warm auburn eyes twinkled as she surveyed our class, “We’ll get started now,” Every second felt like an hour as my friends were all called up. Most people passed, blatantly showing their relief. I shifted at my desk impatiently, my hands itching to do something.

“Rancock, Arianna. Please come up with your object of choice,” I stood up, clutching the button tightly. I was slightly shaking and my heart was pounding, though I tried not to show it.
“Will you need anything?” Ms. Zarrah’s comforting voice put me at ease.
“Yes please, some fabric,” I asked politely. She beamed, handing a piece to me.
“Let me see your object now….” she gasped as she examined my button, then turned and announced to the class, “No magic items are to be used. Disqualified,”

Everyone let out gasps as I trudged to the back of the class, tears stinging my eyes. I couldn’t concentrate for the rest of class and it took all my willpower not to run away as soon as the bell rang. The only thing that stopped me was Ms. Zarrah.
“Ari, come back here please,” I gathered up my courage and walked back to her desk.
“Yes Ms. Zarrah?” I said sweetly, awaiting her lecture. She sighed.
“Your mother had predicted that something like this would happen, and so she asked me to give you a do-over,” I let out a small gasp, daring to hope, “There’s just one problem,” my shoulders slumped again and I looked away, “Your mother wanted you to do cooking,”

This “cooking vs. button” thing that my mom had created was the exact reason I couldn’t show her the button. She had always wanted me to have a craft in cooking, never seeming to understand what a dead skill it was.
“I can’t give you many hints, but think Ari. Why can’t you cook on a button?” My eyes widened as I understood what Ms. Zarrah was trying to say. She gently pressed an ordinary pale blue button into my hand and closed my fingers around it.

The next few hours were a blur as I baked my way through 3 desserts on the button which I had enchanted to do the work. Mom had taught me the recipes over the course of several exhausting days. Ms. Zarrah hummed with delight as she tasted my decadent brownies, perfectly balanced cupcakes, and my fresh and fruity apple cake.
“These are delicious! You passed with flying colors, Ari, great job,”

I beamed. I had found a way to make everyone happy in a style that was uniquely me. I had finally done a good job and done it well.

A Bold Dance of the Ages

Recently, for my English class, we had to write a brochure based on an element of our culture. I picked Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance from the state of Tamil Nadu. I hope you enjoy!

Strong taps echo through the auditorium as the audience watches, mesmerized by the bold and strong dance. The dancer is performing Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical dance. Bharatanatyam is one of the most interesting dance forms because it’s bold, unique, and captivating.

The History:

Bharatanatyam has a rich history through thousands of centuries and kings. Here are some of the most important parts of its history.

CHOLA DYNASTY (9th to 13th century):
The Chola kings left a lasting legacy to Indian classical arts. In the Brihadeeswara temple, there are verses from the Natyasastra and sculptures of Shiva performing the 108 karanas. Many forms of art centered around the temples and grew well.

VIJAYANAGAR DYNASTY (14th century to 15th century)
The Vijayanagar kings provided a lot of patronage to dance. King Krishna Deva Raya (16th century) is said to have been a great supporter.

NAYAKA KINGDOM (16th to 18th century):
King Raghunatha Nayake encouraged dance and music. The king also wrote the Valmiki Charitra which included information about Sadir (the old name for Bharatanatyam) and the talam system.

MARATHA DYNASTY (18th century)
The Maratha rulers had the strongest links to the present-day Bharatanatyam. King Tulaji wrote the Sangeetha Saramitra with a list of adavus. Natwanars were also significant members of the king’s court. The famous Thanjavur brothers lived during this era.

BRITISH ERA
The British Government tabooed dance performances and dancers lost their glory.

REVIVAL (early to mid 20th century)
Art lovers worked to remove the stigma from dance. In 1932, Sadir was renamed to Bharatanatyam.

The Mythological History:

At the beginning of Treetayuga, peoples´ lives were filled with greed, anger, and jealousy. There wasn’t dharma and the asuras ruled the world. To combat this, Lord Brahma created a fifth Veda that would be enjoyable and dispel the bad. Lord Brahma taught this fifth Veda (the Natyaveda) to Bharata, who in turn taught it to his 100 sons.

Bharata asked Lord Brahma to bring down apsaras to add grace.

With this, he was satisfied and performed it at the Dhvaja Mohatsa. The asuras got angry because the play was pointing at their demise. As a result, they started attacking the performers.

Brahma asked the divine architect, Vishwakarma, to build a Natyagriha that would restrict access to evil. Vishwakarma instantly built the perfect theater.

Then Brahma took this play to Lord Shiva. Shiva suggested that they add nritta to the play to enhance it. After watching the show, people understood how to defeat the demons and started living better lives.

The Margam:

A margam is the order in which you learn and perform Bharatanatyam items. The complexity gradually increases as does the time and the abhinaya sections.

It begins with a Pushpanjali and an Alarippu. Combined, this section is around 5 minutes. Next is a kouthuvam, the simplest item, usually 2-3 minutes long. It focuses on bhakti. After this is a jathiswaram. This is a pure adavu dance with no abhinaya. Then, there is a shabdam which is followed by a 45-minute varnam. After that is a Padam or keerthanam, which is more abhinaya based. The margam concludes with a Thillana.

Dr. Sunanda Nair, a Bharatanatyam expert, says the margam is important because “It’s like a school syllabus. You can see every step and you know what you’re learning. When you graduate with a Thillana, you have control of what you know. You peak at that ending point. The margam also gives you a connected approach to dance where everything is linked.”

Her favorite type of item in the margam is the “Padam or Keerthanam, I think. In these, you get connected abhinaya where you can really become a character instead of having abhinaya broken up by jathis.”

The Parts:

There are 3 parts to Bharatanatyam, which are all used to form most items.

1- NRITTA
Nritta is pure dance. It is made up of angas and karanas. It doesn’t contain abhinaya, instead focusing on adavus. One example is the Jathiswaram.

2- NATYA
Natya in Sanskrit means dramatic art. It doesn’t contain adavus, instead focusing on abhinaya. One example is the Padam.

3-NRITYA
Nritya is a combination of both nritta and natya. It includes both adavus and abhinaya. One example is the Kouthuvam.

Aaharya:

There are 3 main parts of the Bharatanatyam Aaharya. These parts are the costume, the makeup, and the jewelry.

There are many different costume styles in Bharatanatyam. There is a skirt style which includes a blouse and a skirt. Another style is the pant costume which is a blouse and pants, with a pleated fan attached to the pants.

The makeup is bold, with thick black eyeliner outlining the eyes, pink eyeshadow, and bright red lipstick. The tips of the fingers and toes are also usually colored red with the palms painted with a red circle.

The jewelry´s base color is gold with green and pink jewels set in. There are two necklaces, a choker and an aaram. You wear a chandra and surya on your head to remind yourself to be grounded and that you are only a speck of dust in the universe. There is also a nethichutti which is partly on your head and partially on your forehead. The earrings are small jumpkhas attached to a maatal. You also wear valaiyal.

The hair is braided, sometimes with a pre-braided extension adorned with ornaments attached. Fake flowers are attached at the back.

On your ankle, you wear chalangai. On your head, you wear a pottu.

Bharatanatyam has filled people with wonder and joy for centuries. It has flourished and grown, even when there are obstacles. Bharatanatyam is such an interesting dance because it is diverse, vivid, and enchanting.

First Week as a Seventh Grader

I just started school! This is my first week in person and I was so excited to meet everyone and see everything that I missed out in my virtual year. Here are some of the things that I experienced during my first week as a seventh grader.

  1. Passing Periods
    I have 5 classes each day, most of them being on the second floor (our school has 3 floors), though some are on other floors. We have 5 minutes to get to each class and after that you’re tardy. It can sometimes be a big race to get to your next class before the tardy bell rings, though I have been on time for everything so far.
  2. One Way Hallways/Stairs
    Because of COVID, our school has added one way hallways to the first and second floors. This can be a bit challenging, especially if your class is two doors down, but you have to walk all around the school in the crowd to get to it in only 5 minutes. Luckily, the crowd thins out as you walk around. We also have one way stairs, so you can only go up certain staircases and down certain staircases.
  3. Homework
    There’s a lot more homework than what I was expecting for the first week of school! A lot of it were only forms to sign, but I did have homework in my Science, English, and Social Studies class. Luckily, the homework is pretty easy, though it will most likely get harder as time passes.
  4. Computers
    We are given school computers to use for the tests and projects we do in certain classes. I got mine on Friday and have already used it in the second week quite a lot (for the beginning of year tests). It’s handy to have a second computer specifically for school work, where you can keep all of your assignments.
  5. My Favorite Classes
    My Favorite Classes so far are Theater and Science. I love theater because of all the fun activities we do and all the chances we get to learn what we like and how we do everything. Our teacher’s also very nice. I absolutely love our science teacher and the energy that she gives off. She makes learning much more fun and I’m really glad I’m in her class!

What I’m looking forward to in the 2021-2022 School Year

School is starting up soon! My middle school starts on the 23rd and I am very excited. I can’t wait to go in-person this year and experience 7th grade. There are many things that I’m looking forward to, so I thought that I’d share some with you.

  1. In-Person School
    Last year, I was virtual for all school year. For 7th grade, I get to go back in person (fingers crossed). I’m excited to see how middle school classes are in person. Meeting my friends is an added bonus!

  2. Student Council
    This year, I got into the Student Council or STUCO. I’m very excited for this opportunity and the ways that I can use it in my daily life. I can’t wait to meet others with this club!

  3. Meeting My Friends
    I’ve made some friends last year and while I have met them, I’ve only seen them about 3 or 4 times. I don’t have them in a lot of my classes, but I am glad that I will see them a few more times this year.

  4. Meeting my Teachers
    Last year, I rarely saw my teachers in-person. I am elated that this year, I’ll be able to talk to them face-to-face. This also helps with my learning, because I’ll be able to understand my lessons more.
